Superb documentation on Central Avenue life in the s, as well as the personalities and sounds that came out of West Coast Jazz. Often regarded as "cool jazz," this was a remarkable period of California culture - as it produced brilliant music by such people as Chet Baker, Art Pepper, Charles Mingus, Shelley Manne and many others/5(10).

Jul 21,  · Always been a big Art Pepper fan and the Fantasy 45s have been like uncovering a brand new stash (Smack Up and Meets the Rhythm Section have long been favorites). Harold Land's Harold in the Land of Jazz, aka Groove Yard, is great (and would have made for a perfect Fantasy 45). My favorite West Coast tenor player is Wardell Gray; check out his Central Avenue collection.

Opined Bill Perkins: "I would say Bill Holman's music was the best-liked by the band. The secret? Taste and voice-leading. Bill Holman wrote the book on voice-leading for big bands.” And Phil Gilbert: ''I think Bill Holman is the greatest composer/ arranger alive or dead, just listen to .

Stu Williamson was not yet 24 when these recordings were made. He had this quality as a trumpet player and as a musical person that allowed him to take his place alongside the half dozen other trumpet players who formed the core of what was the fairly permanent West Coast jazz scene.
